From Greek "kosmos" (universe, order): found in words about space, the whole world, and universal scale.

In Spanish: cosmo-Scientific

Written by Bryan López, English teacher · Updated July 2026

What does it mean?

"Cosmo-" comes from Greek "kosmos," which meant order, arrangement, and by extension the universe as an ordered whole. Ancient Greeks saw the cosmos as a perfectly ordered system — the opposite of chaos. The prefix appears in astronomy, philosophy, and beauty products.

Spanish connection

The prefix is identical in Spanish: cosmología (cosmology), cosmopolita (cosmopolitan), cosmos (cosmos). Even "cosmética" (cosmetics) shares the root, because the Greeks used "kosmos" to mean adornment and beautification as well as the universe.

How it is used

Cosmo- combines with other roots to describe the universe and world-spanning concepts:

  • cosmo- + -logy → cosmology
the scientific study of the universe's origin and structure
  • cosmo- + -politan → cosmopolitan
a citizen of the world, at home in any culture
  • micro- + -cosm → microcosm
a small world that mirrors or represents a larger reality

"Cosmonaut" is the Soviet/Russian equivalent of "astronaut" — a traveler of the cosmos. Both words describe space travelers from different space-age traditions.

Common mistakes

cosmetics has nothing to do with the cosmos
cosmetics and cosmos share the same Greek root "kosmos" (order, adornment)

Greeks used "kosmos" for both the ordered universe and personal adornment. "Cosmetics" comes from "kosmein" (to arrange, to adorn), derived from "kosmos." The connection is real: both involve the idea of order and arrangement.

A trick to remember it

Cosmo- = universe / ordered world. Remember that "cosmos" and "cosmetics" share a root — the Greeks saw both the universe and personal grooming as expressions of order. A "cosmopolitan" person is so familiar with the whole world that they feel at home everywhere.
