ante-

Signals before or in front of: antecedent, anteroom, antenatal, antebellum, antediluvian.

In Spanish: ante-Literary

Written by Bryan López, English teacher · Updated July 2026

Before, in front of

Ante- comes from Latin "ante" (before, in front of) and signals temporal or spatial priority: antecedent = what comes before (in grammar: the noun a pronoun refers back to; in general: anything that precedes); antenatal = before birth (prenatal); anteroom = the waiting room that stands in front of the main room; antebellum = before the war (especially referring to the period before the American Civil War).

Ante- vs pre-

Ante- and pre- both mean "before," but with nuances: ante- (Latin) tends to appear in more formal and specific terms related to position or precedence (antecedent, anteroom, antebellum, antenatal); pre- (also Latin) is more productive in modern English and used in broader contexts (pre-war, pre-natal, pre-existing). In many cases, both exist as variants: antenatal / prenatal.

How it is used

Attaches to formal nouns and adjectives. Identical in Spanish and English:

  • ante- + temporal term
    cedent → antecedentbellum → antebellumnatal → antenataldiluvian → antediluvian
  • ante- + space/position
    room → anteroomchamber → antechamberpendium → antependiummeridiem → ante meridiem (a.m.)

Pronunciation: /ˈænti/. Identical in Spanish and English. "Ante meridiem" (a.m.) = before noon. Do not confuse with "anti-" (= against), which is pronounced identically but has a completely different meaning.

Common mistakes

ante- and anti- are the same prefix
ante- = "before/in front of" (temporal or spatial); anti- = "against" (opposition)

"Ante-" (from Latin "ante" = before/in front) and "anti-" (from Greek "anti" = against) are completely different in meaning, though they look and sound similar. "Antenatal" = before birth. "Antiviral" = against viruses. They cannot be interchanged.

antediluvian = simply very old
antediluvian = literally "before the biblical flood"; figuratively, so old-fashioned as to be absurd or comically outdated

"Antediluvian" (ante- = before + diluvian = the flood/deluge) literally refers to the period before the biblical Flood. In figurative use, it has a strong humorous or dismissive tone: something antediluvian is not just old but so obsolete as to be laughable. "His antediluvian views on technology" = comically behind the times.

A trick to remember it

Ante- = "before" or "in front of": antecedent = what comes before, anteroom = the room in front of the main room, antenatal = before birth, antebellum = before the war. Identical in Spanish. Do not confuse with anti- (= against): "antenatal" (before birth) is completely different from "antinatal" (which does not exist).
