What does it mean?

"Crypt-" / "crypto-" comes from Greek "kryptos," meaning hidden or concealed. It appears in historical words (cryptography, apocryphal) and modern technology (cryptocurrency, encryption). The unifying idea is always something concealed, coded, or hard to decipher.

Spanish connection

Spanish uses "cripto-": criptografía (cryptography), criptomoneda (cryptocurrency). The verb "encriptar" (to encrypt) is built on this root. The word "cripta" (crypt), an underground vault, preserves the original sense of a hidden place.

How it is used

Crypt- / crypto- combines with other roots to describe secrecy and concealment:

  • crypto- + -graphy → cryptography
the art and science of writing and solving coded messages
  • de- + crypt → decrypt
to decode a secret message (de- = undo, reverse)
  • en- + crypt → encrypt
to convert data into a coded format to hide it from others

"Apocryphal" comes from "apo-" (away from) + "kryptos" (hidden): texts kept hidden from the official canon, now meaning stories of doubtful authenticity. Even Superman's "kryptonite" — his hidden weakness — plays on this root.

Common mistakes

crypto- only refers to cryptocurrency in modern usage
crypto- has centuries of history beyond digital currency

While "crypto" has been popularized by cryptocurrency, the prefix predates it by centuries: cryptography, apocryphal, cryptic, kryptonite. Do not let the modern financial use overshadow the broader meaning of "hidden" across all contexts.

A trick to remember it

Crypt- = hidden or secret. A crypt is a hidden underground vault; cryptography hides messages in code; something cryptic hides its meaning behind obscure language. In the digital age, encryption hides your data from unauthorized access — the ancient Greek root is more relevant than ever.
