Written by Bryan López, English teacher · Updated July 2026

Beyond, about itself

Meta- comes from Greek "meta" (after, beyond, with, among) and signals that something goes beyond itself or reflects on its own nature: metaphor = a figure that carries meaning "beyond" the literal words; metamorphosis = a transformation that goes beyond the original form; metadata = data about data; metafiction = fiction about fiction itself. The most common modern sense is "something referring to or about itself."

Meta- in philosophy and technology

In philosophy: metaphysics = the study of what lies beyond physics, the foundations of reality; metacognition = thinking about one's own thinking. In technology: metadata = data that describes other data (a file's author, creation date); metaverse = the virtual universe that exists "beyond" the physical one. In modern colloquial use, "meta" alone = self-referential or self-aware.

How it is used

Attaches to philosophical, technical, and cultural nouns. Identical in Spanish and English:

Common mistakes

metaphor and simile are the same figure of speech
metaphor = an implicit comparison saying A IS B; simile = an explicit comparison using "like" or "as"

"Metaphor": "Life is a journey" (A IS B — direct identification, no comparative marker). "Simile": "Life is like a journey" (A IS LIKE B — the comparison is explicit with "like" or "as"). Both are figures of speech, but the simile makes the comparison visible with a marker.

metabolism = the rate at which we gain or lose weight
metabolism = the entire set of chemical reactions that sustain life in an organism; basal metabolic rate is just one component

"Metabolism" encompasses all chemical reactions in the organism: anabolism (building molecules) and catabolism (breaking them down). What people typically associate with weight (the rate at which calories are burned at rest) is more precisely the "basal metabolic rate" (BMR).

A trick to remember it

Meta- = "beyond" or "about itself": metaphor = comparison beyond the literal, metamorphosis = transformation beyond the original form, metadata = data about data, metaverse = a universe beyond the physical. Identical in Spanish and English. In modern use, "meta" alone = self-referential, self-aware.
