A smaller version of something

Mini- comes from Latin "minimus" (the smallest) and signals a reduced or small version of something. miniature = something made at a very small scale; minibar = a small bar (in hotel rooms); minimum = the smallest possible amount; miniskirt = a very short skirt; minivan = a compact van. The idea is always "a compact or reduced version."

Mini- vs micro- vs nano-

Mini- implies "smaller than normal" in a relative, informal sense, while micro- (10⁻⁶) and nano- (10⁻⁹) are precise scientific prefixes with exact values. A "mini-computer" is smaller than a mainframe but has no fixed scale. A "microsecond" is exactly one millionth of a second. Mini- is relative and informal; micro- and nano- are absolute in scientific use.

How it is used

Attaches to nouns and adjectives. Identical in Spanish and English:

  • mini- + general noun

  • mini- + technical term

minimum and minimal mean the same thing
minimum = the lowest value required or possible (precise/technical); minimal = reduced to the bare essentials (descriptive/stylistic)

miniature = only collector figurines
miniature = anything made at a very small scale relative to the original size

"Miniature" describes any very small version of something: a miniature golf course, a miniature painting (small Renaissance portraits), a miniature dog breed, a miniature bottle of wine. It is not limited to figurines or collectables.

A trick to remember it

Mini- = "small" or "reduced version": miniature = a small-scale version, minimum = the lowest value, minibar = a small bar, miniseries = a short series. Identical in Spanish and English. Key difference: mini- is relative and informal; micro- and nano- are precise and scientific.
