Prefix · quantity / excess

over-

Signals excess or going beyond the normal limit: overwork, overlook, overcome, overtime.

In Spanish: sobre- / demasiadoBasic

Written by Bryan López, English teacher · Updated July 2026

Too much of something

Over- always signals excess: more than normal, more than desired, more than correct. With verbs it means doing something too much: overeat, oversleep, overcharge, overload. With adjectives and nouns it signals something that exceeds the expected level: overconfident, overtime, overpriced.

Over- as "above" and "across"

Over- also has a spatial meaning: above or across. overpass = a road that goes over another; overhead = above the head; overall = across everything. "Overcome" literally means to come over an obstacle. In everyday conversation, the excess sense is by far the more productive meaning to learn first.

How it is used

Attaches directly to verbs, adjectives, and nouns:

  • over- + verb (excess)
    eat → overeatsleep → oversleepcharge → overchargeload → overload
  • over- + verb (above/across)
    come → overcomelook → overlookrule → overrule
  • over- + noun/adjective
    time → overtimeconfident → overconfidentall → overall

No spelling change to the root. Stress falls on the first syllable: /ˈoʊvər/.

Common mistakes

overcome = get over something physical only
overcome works for any obstacle, physical or abstract

"Overcome" is used just as commonly with fears, grief, and abstract difficulties: overcome fear, overcome obstacles, overcome grief.

overlook = to look from above (always)
overlook most often means "to fail to notice"

The spatial meaning ("a room overlooking the sea") is real but less frequent than the figurative sense of missing or ignoring something by accident.

A trick to remember it

Picture a scale tipping too far to one side. When a word has over-, something has gone past its normal limit: overwork = too much work, overload = too much load, overconfident = too much confidence. That image of excess works for almost every over- word.
