Prefix · heat / temperature

therm-

From Greek "thermē" (heat): one of science's most useful roots, appearing in physics, medicine, and everyday technology.

In Spanish: termo-Basic

Written by Bryan López, English teacher · Updated July 2026

What does it mean?

"Therm-" / "thermo-" comes from Greek "thermē," meaning heat. It is one of the most productive scientific roots in English, appearing in thermometers, thermodynamics, hypothermia, and even the brand name "Thermos" (the insulated container that maintains temperature).

Spanish connection

Spanish uses "termo-": termómetro (thermometer), termodinámica (thermodynamics), termostato (thermostat), hipotermia (hypothermia). The root is so productive that it appears across physics, medicine, earth science, and household products in both languages.

How it is used

Therm- / thermo- combines with other roots to describe heat, temperature, and thermal energy:

  • thermo- + -meter → thermometer
    an instrument that measures temperature
  • thermo- + -dynamics → thermodynamics
the science of thermal energy and its transformations
  • hypo- + therm- + -ia → hypothermia
dangerously low body temperature (hypo- = below)

"Exothermic" describes a chemical reaction that releases heat (exo- = outside); "endothermic" describes one that absorbs heat (endo- = within). These are essential terms in chemistry and biology.

In a phrase
  • ometerthermometerThe nurse checked the patient's fever with a digital thermometer placed under the tongue.
  • althermalThermal imaging cameras detect body heat and can locate people in total darkness.
  • ostatthermostatSmart thermostats learn your schedule and automatically adjust the temperature for comfort and savings.
  • odynamicsthermodynamicsThermodynamics explains why no engine can ever be one hundred percent efficient.
  • (hypo)thermiahypothermiaRescuers wrapped the hypothermia victim in emergency blankets and moved him away from the frozen water.
  • (hyper)thermiahyperthermiaMedically induced hyperthermia is being studied as a way to destroy cancer cells more effectively.
  • (geo)thermalgeothermalIceland generates nearly all its electricity from geothermal energy drawn from volcanic activity.

Common mistakes

thermal only means warm or hot
thermal refers to temperature in general, including cold management

"Thermal underwear" retains body heat in cold weather — the word relates to temperature regulation, not just warmth. "Hypothermia" is also built on this root, describing dangerously low temperature.

A trick to remember it

Therm- = heat/temperature. The thermometer measures it, the thermostat regulates it, thermodynamics studies how it flows. Add "hypo-" (below) for hypothermia and "hyper-" (above) for hyperthermia. This root appears in physics, medicine, geology, and everyday kitchen gadgets.

Practise what you learned

Exercise 1 · Form the word

A device that maintains a set temperature in a building by automatically controlling the heating and cooling system is called a ___.

Hint: thermo- (heat/temperature) + -stat (that which stabilizes)

Exercise 2 · Pick the right one

When a person's core body temperature drops dangerously low due to cold exposure, the condition is called ___.
