It's five minutes before the school play. The hall is full of moms, dads and grandparents. Behind the red curtain, Cyrus is ready. He is a tree in the play. He has green paper leaves on his arms and one line. It's the first line of the play: "Quiet, please!"
Then it starts. Hic! His chest jumps. Hic! His leaves shake. Hic! His face is red.
"Oh no," says Petra. She is the moon in the play. "You have the hiccups! A big scare can stop them."
Petra jumps out from behind a box and shouts, "Boo!" Hic. The teacher drops a big book on the floor. Bang! Hic. A boy in a lion costume roars in his ear. Hic. Nothing works.
Now there are two minutes. Everybody has an idea. Drink some water! Hold your nose! Hold your breath! Stand on one leg! It's very noisy behind the curtain, and Cyrus is very unhappy. Hic.
Then the lights go down, and the curtain opens. Cyrus walks to the middle of the stage. Behind him, the other kids are still talking. He takes a big, deep breath. He opens his mouth, and he shouts his line, very loud: "QUIET, PLEASE!"
Everybody on the stage stops. Everybody in the hall stops. And the hiccups stop, too.
