Frequently asked questions about practicing English reading

What is reading comprehension practice and why does it matter?

Reading comprehension is the skill of understanding a text in English without translating it word by word in your head. It is one of the four core language skills, alongside listening, speaking, and writing, and the easiest one to practice daily since it only takes a short text and a few minutes, no partner required.

Where can I find free English reading exercises by level?

SpeakUP Academy has short and long readings organized by genre (slice of life, romance, action, mystery) and by CEFR level from A1 to C1, each with key vocabulary explained with a single tap and comprehension exercises at the end. Free, no account needed.

What kinds of reading exercises are included?

Every reading has four separate exercise types: comprehension questions about the story, true-or-false statements, an event-ordering exercise to rebuild the plot, and vocabulary-in-context questions using brand-new sentences (not copied from the text), so you prove you actually learned the word instead of just recognizing it.

Do I need advanced English to start practicing reading?

No. Readings start at level A1 (absolute beginner) with short texts and basic vocabulary, and progress up to C1. If you are not sure of your level, take the free level test first.

Are difficult words explained as I read?

Yes. Every key word or phrase has a definition available with a single tap inside the text itself, in plain English and in Spanish. No need to leave the page to look it up in a dictionary.
