  1. No subject. The verb goes first: Open your books.
  2. Don't to say no. Don't run in the house.
  3. The same for one or many. Sit down works for everyone.

Let's go home.

We go together

Go home is an order for the other person. Let's go home includes you: we go together.

Part 5: let's

In real life

An order without please can sound rude. With please, or with Can you...?, it sounds polite: Please sit down. Can you sit down, please?

Frequently asked questions

Does the imperative change for one person or many?

No: Sit down works for one person or a group.

Can you use you in the imperative?

Sometimes, to show who you are talking to: You sit here, and you sit there. Usually there is no subject.

How do you say never in an order?

Put never first: Never touch the stove. It is stronger than Don't touch the stove.

In short

  • To say no: Don't + verb: Don't run.
