What is Conjunctions?
Conjunctions join words, phrases and clauses. The most common are and (addition), but (contrast), or (choice), because (cause), so (result), although (concession), when and if (time and condition). They let you move from short sentences to smoother speech.
When to use it
Use them to explain reasons ("I stayed home because I was sick"), contrast ideas ("It is cheap but good"), give options ("tea or coffee") and chain actions ("I ate and went to bed").
Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers
- Because answers why and is followed by a full clause: "because I was tired". With a noun use because of: "because of the rain".
- So expresses result: "It was late, so I left". Do not confuse it with because, which works the other way around.
- Although and but are not used together: "Although it was cold, we went out" or "It was cold, but we went out".
