How to get the most out of the level test

There is not just one test here, there are three: the complete one measures Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Listening and gives you your real CEFR level from A1 to C1; the short Vocabulary and Grammar tests measure a single skill in a third of the time. All three are free, no account needed, and the questions change every time you retake them.

The result tells you where to start studying, it is not an official certificate: none of them assess Speaking or Writing. Use it to pick lessons and readings at your real level, instead of guessing or always starting from zero.

Step by step

   Choose what you want to measure. If you have never taken a test or want your overall level, take the Complete Test. If you only want to check one specific skill, the shorter Vocabulary or Grammar tests are quicker.

   Take it without a dictionary. The point is to see what you actually know right now. Looking up the answers elsewhere only gives you a false result that is useless to you.

   Read your CEFR level carefully. A1 is beginner and C1 is advanced. Read the description of your level to understand what you can already do and what is still missing.

   Start studying at that level. Go to the grammar lessons or readings that match your result, not the easiest ones or the hardest ones.

Tips to progress faster

• Retake the complete test every 2-3 months of real study, not the next week: that way the level change you see will be a real one.
• If your result falls right between two levels, start with the lower one: it builds confidence and reinforces the basics before you move up.
• Save your result or take a screenshot: it is useful to compare your progress later on.
