What is Future Simple (will)?
The Future Simple with will expresses spontaneous decisions, predictions and promises. It is formed with will plus the base verb for every person: "I will call you", "She will be late". In speech it contracts to 'll, and to won't in the negative.
When to use it
Use it to decide something on the spot ("I'll take the blue one"), make promises ("I'll help you"), offer help, predict ("It will rain tomorrow") and give opinions about the future with think, hope or probably.
Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers
- After when, if, as soon as and before you do not use will: "I'll call you when I arrive".
- Will never changes with the person: "she will", never "she wills".
- For plans already made, going to sounds more natural than will. Compare: "I'll help you" (decision now) and "I'm going to study medicine" (earlier plan).
Examples
I will call you tonight.
Te llamaré esta noche.
It won't rain tomorrow.
Mañana no va a llover.
Will you help me?
¿Me ayudarás?
