Irregular verbs

1 lesson about irregular verbs in English, explained in Spanish. Practice with exercises and download worksheets.

What is Irregular verbs?

Irregular verbs do not follow the -ed rule for the past and the participle. Some change completely (go, went, gone), others change a vowel (sing, sang, sung) and some never change (put, put, put). There are not many, but they are the most used in the language.

When to use it

You need them in the Past Simple ("I went"), the Present Perfect ("I have gone") and the passive voice ("It was written"). Verbs like be, have, do, go, see, get, make and take appear in almost every conversation.

Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers

  • Learn the three forms together: infinitive, past and participle. For example, write, wrote, written.
  • Group them by pattern: sing, sang, sung; ring, rang, rung; drink, drank, drunk. They are easier to remember that way.
  • After did or didn't the verb goes back to its base form: "Did you see him?", not "Did you saw him?".
