What is Pronunciation?
English pronunciation does not always match spelling. Some sounds do not exist in Spanish (th, the short i of ship, the a of cat) and words have stressed syllables that shape the rhythm of a sentence. Improving it helps people understand you, even if you are not perfect.
When to use it
Work on it from the start, not at the end. Listen to audio, repeat aloud and compare. Long words and words ending in -ed or -s have specific sound rules worth knowing.
Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers
- The -ed ending has three sounds: /t/ (worked), /d/ (played) and /ɪd/ (wanted).
- The th sound comes in two versions: voiceless (think) and voiced (this). Put your tongue between your teeth.
- English is stress-timed: in "photograph" stress falls on the first syllable; in "photography", on the second.
