What is Questions?

Questions in English follow a fixed word order that differs from Spanish. Yes/no questions start with an auxiliary (do, does, did, am, is, are, can, will): "Do you like it?". Information questions start with a question word (what, where, when, why, who, how) followed by the auxiliary and the subject.

When to use it

You use them to ask for information, confirm something, request help or start a conversation. Mastering the auxiliary + subject + verb order lets you ask almost anything without relying on intonation as Spanish does.

Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers

  • With the Present Simple and Past Simple you need do, does or did: "Where does she live?". The main verb stays in its base form.
  • There is no inverted question mark, and the order changes: "You are ready" becomes "Are you ready?".
  • When the question word is the subject, no auxiliary is used: "Who called you?".
