What is Spelling?
English spelling seems irregular because the language borrowed words from many sources. Still, there are useful patterns: the silent final e that lengthens the vowel (hop, hope), the i before e rule (believe) and the rules for adding -ing, -ed or -s.
When to use it
Use it when you write or when you doubt how a word is spelled. Spelling mistakes are among the most frequent in learners' writing and are easy to fix with a few rules.
Common mistakes and tips for Spanish speakers
- When adding -ing to a verb ending in e, the e drops: make, making. If it ends in a short vowel plus consonant, the consonant doubles: run, running.
- Nouns ending in consonant + y change to -ies: city, cities; baby, babies.
- Watch double letters: necessary, occasion, address. Learn them one by one.
