What does it mean?

"Ethn-" / "ethno-" comes from Greek "ethnos," meaning a nation, tribe, or people sharing a common culture. Today it appears in academic vocabulary across anthropology, sociology, and linguistics when discussing cultural groups and identities.

Spanish connection

Spanish uses "etno-" as the equivalent: etnología (ethnology), etnografía (ethnography), etnocentrismo (ethnocentrism). The adjective "ethnic" (étnico) is common in everyday language in both languages.

How it is used

Ethno- combines with Greek and Latin roots to form academic terms about human groups:

  • ethno- + -logy → ethnology
    the comparative study of human cultures and societies
  • ethno- + -graphy → ethnography
    detailed fieldwork description of a specific culture
  • ethno- + -centrism → ethnocentrism
    judging other cultures by the standards of your own

"Ethnic" describes something related to a specific cultural or national group. "Ethnicity" refers to a person's cultural identity, including language, traditions, and ancestry.

Common mistakes

ethnic = racial (biological)
ethnic = related to shared culture, language, and tradition

"Ethnic" refers to cultural identity — shared language, customs, and traditions — not strictly biological characteristics. While "ethnic" and "racial" sometimes overlap in everyday use, they are conceptually distinct.

A trick to remember it

Ethno- = a people with their own culture. Think "ethnic food" (the cuisine of a cultural group) or "ethnic neighborhood." In academic contexts, ethnography describes a culture from within, while ethnology compares cultures across the world.
