Cinderella lived with her stepmother and her two stepsisters, and they were not kind to her. She cooked, cleaned, and washed the floors all day. At night, she slept near the fireplace, where the ashes were still warm.
One day, an invitation arrived from the palace. The prince was giving a ball, and every young woman in the kingdom could go. "I want to go too," said Cinderella. Her stepmother laughed. "You? In that old dress? Stay home and clean the kitchen."
On the night of the ball, the stepmother and the stepsisters left in a fine carriage. Cinderella sat alone in the kitchen and cried. Suddenly, a woman appeared in front of her. "Don't cry," she said. "I'm your fairy godmother. You're going to the ball."
The fairy godmother touched a big pumpkin with her wand, and it became a golden carriage. Six mice became six white horses. Then she touched Cinderella's old dress, and it turned into a beautiful gown. On her feet, there were two shining glass slippers. "But remember," said the fairy godmother. "At midnight, the magic ends. You must be home before then."
At the palace, everybody looked at the mysterious girl. The prince danced with her all night, and Cinderella forgot the time. Suddenly, the clock began to strike twelve. "I have to go!" she said, and she ran down the stairs. In her hurry, one glass slipper fell off her foot. The prince found it on the steps, but the girl was gone.
The next day, the prince said, "I'll marry the girl who fits this slipper." His servants visited every house in the kingdom. The stepsisters pushed and pulled, but the slipper was too small for their feet. At last, the servants came to Cinderella's house. "Let me try," said Cinderella. The servant knelt down, and the slipper fit perfectly. Then Cinderella took the other slipper out of her pocket.
