Nico was a young shepherd. Every day, he took the sheep to a green hill near his village. The work was easy, but it was also boring.
One afternoon, Nico had an idea. He stood on a rock and shouted, "Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is eating the sheep!" The men in the village ran up the hill with sticks. But there was no wolf. Nico laughed. "It was a joke!" The men were angry.
The next day, Nico did it again. "Wolf! Wolf!" he shouted. The men came again, and again there was no wolf. "Don't do that again," said an old man.
One evening, a real wolf came out of the trees. Nico was afraid. "Wolf! Wolf! Please help!" he shouted. But nobody came. The men thought, "It is another joke." The wolf took two sheep and ran away.
That night, Nico sat with the last sheep. He did not sleep. He watched the dark hill until the sun came up.
