One sunny day, a crow sat on a high branch of an old tree. She was holding a big piece of yellow cheese in her beak, and she felt very proud. She wanted to eat it slowly, in a quiet place.
Below the tree, a sly fox was walking through the forest. He was hungry, and he smelled something delicious. He looked up and saw the cheese. "I want that cheese," he thought. "But how can I get it?"
The fox sat under the tree and smiled his friendliest smile. "Good morning, dear crow!" he said. "What beautiful black feathers you have! They shine like the night." The crow said nothing, but she was listening.
"And you're so elegant," the fox went on. "I'm sure you have the most wonderful voice in the forest. Everybody says so. Could you sing one song for me?" The crow felt flattered. Nobody ever said such nice things to her.
She opened her beak to sing, "Caw! Caw!" and the cheese fell out. The fox caught it before it touched the ground. "Thank you, my friend," he said, and he took a big bite. "A delicious lunch. And a good lesson: be careful with people who only say nice things." It was an old trick, but it worked.
He trotted away, chewing happily. High in the tree, the crow looked at her empty beak and said nothing. She didn't feel proud any more.
