A hare and a tortoise live near a green hill. The hare is very fast, and he laughs at everybody. "I'm the fastest animal in the forest," he says. Then he looks at the tortoise. "And you're the slowest."
The tortoise is not angry. "Let's have a race," she says. "You and me, from this tree to that big rock." All the animals laugh. "A race? The hare is faster than a horse!" But the tortoise says, "Let's see."
The race begins. The hare runs very fast. After a minute, he is far away, and the tortoise is still next to the tree. "This is easy," thinks the hare. "She's so slow."
The hare sees a soft, grassy spot under a big tree. "I've got a lot of time," he says. "I can take a little nap." He lies down and closes his eyes. Soon he is asleep.
The tortoise does not stop. Step by step, she walks past the sleeping hare. She is slow, but she never gets tired. The big rock is very close now.
The hare is still asleep under the tree when the tortoise crosses the line. All the animals cheer. The noise wakes him up. He opens one eye and sees the tortoise next to the big rock.
