Rosa loves food, but she is the worst cook on her street. Tonight she has a big dinner party for her neighbors. She wants to make five special dishes. "Everything is perfect," she says.
The soup is very salty. The rice is burnt and black. The chicken is still pink inside. The bread is hard like a rock. Rosa puts everything on the table and smiles.
The neighbors arrive. Mr. Kim tries the soup and coughs. Mrs. Brown cannot cut the bread. A little boy tastes the rice. "Mama, it's black!" he says. "Shh," says his mother. "It's very... interesting."
Rosa is happy. "Do you like my food?" she asks. "Yes, yes," says Mr. Kim, and he drinks a lot of water. "It's... different," says Mrs. Brown. Everybody is polite. Nobody tells her the truth.
After dinner, the neighbors go home quickly. That night, Rosa looks out of her window. All the kitchen lights on the street are on. Mr. Kim cooks noodles. Mrs. Brown makes a sandwich. The little boy eats a big bowl of cereal.
Rosa smiles. "What a happy street!" she says. "Everybody is cooking tonight." She does not know the secret. Nobody can eat her food, so everybody is very hungry.
