It is Monday morning. Tom is at his new school. He is nervous. The school is big, and there are a lot of doors. His class is in Room 12, but he cannot find it.
Tom opens a door. It is the music room. A boy plays the drums very loudly. "Sorry!" says Tom, and he closes the door. The next door is the library. Everybody says, "Shh!" Tom says "Sorry" again.
He goes upstairs. There is a big room with a lot of balls. It is the gym! A teacher asks, "Are you lost?" "Yes," says Tom. "Where is Room 12?" "It's next to the science lab," says the teacher. Then he adds, "But there are two science labs."
Tom finds one science lab, but Room 12 is not next to it. He is late, and he feels very small. He sits on a bench in the hall. He does not know what to do.
A girl with a red backpack comes. "Hi! Are you new?" she asks. "I'm Lucy. You look lost." "I am," says Tom. "I can't find Room 12." Lucy smiles. "Follow me. It's behind the stairs. Everybody gets lost on the first day."
In Room 12, the teacher says, "Good morning, Tom. Take a seat." Tom looks at the class. There are two empty chairs. One is at the front, and one is at the back. Lucy does not say anything. She takes her backpack off the chair next to her and looks at him. Tom smiles and sits down.
