What does -work signal?

-work retains the meaning of "labor" or "structured activity" but specializes according to the first element: • Organized activity: teamwork, homework, guesswork, groundwork • Structure or system: framework, network, clockwork • Crafted material: woodwork, metalwork, brickwork, ironwork, patchwork • Decorative craft: lacework, needlework, leatherwork In every case the compound names an activity, product, or system defined by its nature or material.

The most important: framework and network

"Framework" is ubiquitous in academic, corporate, and technical English: "a theoretical framework," "a legal framework," "the framework for negotiations." It does not mean a literal picture frame — it is a conceptual structure that organizes ideas or processes. "Network" is equally essential: professional contacts, computer networks, transport systems, broadcast channels (TV network). It comes from "net" (fishing net) + "work" (structured arrangement).

Literary -work: handiwork and patchwork

"Handiwork" refers to the visible result of someone's skill or actions: "This sculpture is the handiwork of a master." "The disaster was clearly his handiwork." "Patchwork" (something made of pieces stitched together) has rich metaphorical use: "a patchwork of fields," "a patchwork of laws," "a patchwork solution." It evokes something assembled from heterogeneous parts.
