How to study this deck

The past participle is the third form of the verb and is used in the Present Perfect (I have gone), the Past Perfect and the passive voice (It was written). Learn each participle next to its infinitive and put it in a sentence with have or be. Group the ones that follow a pattern, like break, broken; speak, spoken; choose, chosen.

The trickiest words

  • gone: it is the participle of go: "She has gone home". You do not say "she has went".
  • gotten / got: in American English the participle of get is gotten; in British English it is got.
  • drunk: it is the participle of drink ("I have drunk water"). It is also an adjective meaning intoxicated.
