Why it trips people up

A course is the whole programme, a lesson is one unit inside it, and a class is the group or the meeting where it is taught. They get mixed up because one school day can involve all three at once.

Common mistakes

Wrong: He teaches a lesson of twenty students.

Right: He teaches a class of twenty students.

A group of students is a class. A lesson is what is taught.

Wrong: I learned an important class from my father.

Right: I learned an important lesson from my father.

Something you learn from an experience is a lesson, not a class.

Memory trick

From big to small: a course contains lessons, and each is taught in a class. If you mean the students, say class.

It depends
