There is significa "hay" (singular) y se usa para decir que algo existe o está en un lugar: "There is a bank near here". La forma corta es there's. Va seguido de un sustantivo singular o incontable ("There is some milk"). Para el plural se usa there are. Para preguntar: "Is there a bank near here?", y la negativa es "There isn't...". En español "hay" es un solo verbo, pero en inglés es there + be, y no se dice "It has a bank" ni "Have a bank".
There is se usa con un solo sustantivo o con incontables ("There is a book", "There is water"); there are se usa con plurales ("There are two books"). Si la lista tiene varios elementos, en el inglés hablado concuerda con el primero: "There's a pen and two books". En preguntas: "Is there...?" y "Are there...?". Ojo: en español "hay" no cambia, en inglés sí.
