, and thank you for looking after our house while we're away (April 3 to 17)! Our house is the last one at the top of the hill, so you've probably already met the wind. Florin and I have tried to think of everything. Please read this list before you unpack. Some of it may seem strange, but every rule is here for a reason.

1. The front door sticks. If it won't open, don't push it with your shoulder. Lift the handle first, then turn the key. Florin pushed it with his shoulder once, and we had to replace the glass.

2. If the cat brings you a sock, please say thank you and put it on the stairs. He started doing this when our son left for university, and we think he's still looking for him.

3. Never use the dishwasher and the hair dryer at the same time. If the lights go off, you don't need to call anyone. Just go down to the basement and push up the red switch. We learned this on our wedding anniversary, with a cake in the oven.

4. On Sunday mornings, you might hear a trumpet at seven o'clock. It's the neighbor in the yellow house. If you'd like to make him happy, open a window and clap. Nobody else on the hill does.

5. Please water the vegetable garden every evening unless it rains. If you see a rabbit, you must not chase it. Our daughter has given a name to every rabbit on this hill, and she will know if one is missing.

6. The fern in the big pot by the kitchen window needs a full glass of water every morning. Talk to it if you like. It has lived here longer than the cat.

7. If something goes wrong, you can call us, but you should try the neighbors first. Florin's phone is always at the bottom of a bag, and mine has no signal where we're going. The neighbor with the trumpet has a key and knows how everything works, including the front door.

Make yourself at home, and enjoy the view. It's the best thing about this house.

Agathe

P.S. The fern is plastic. Water it anyway. Our daughter has watered it every morning since she was four, and she has asked me three times to make sure you do the same.
