Marco starts work at five in the morning. The bakery is dark and quiet, but the ovens are warm. The owner, Mrs. Silva, gives him a white apron. "Today you learn three sentences," she says. "Can I help you? Here you are. Anything else?"
Marco repeats them out loud. He practices with the flour, with the ovens, and even with a bag of sugar.
At six, the first customer arrives: a tall man with a newspaper. "A loaf of whole wheat, please," he says. Marco does not know the word "loaf." He looks at Mrs. Silva, and she points to a long brown bread. "Oh!" says Marco. "Here you are. Anything else?" "No, thanks." "That's two dollars, please."
By noon, Marco knows ten new words: loaf, roll, bun, crust, and more. A woman always buys two rolls. A man only buys the last loaf.
In the evening, Marco is tired, and his hands smell like bread. Mrs. Silva puts a warm loaf in a paper bag. "Here you are," she says. "How much is it?" asks Marco. "Nothing," she laughs. "It's on the house." Marco does not know this phrase, but he understands the smile.
