is summer in a big field of wheat. A little ant is carrying a grain of wheat to her nest under the ground.

On a tall green leaf, a grasshopper is playing his violin and singing. "Hey, Ant!" he calls. "Why are you working on a beautiful day like this? Come and sing with me!"

"I can't," says the ant. "I'm saving food for the winter, and you should too." The grasshopper laughs. "Winter? Winter is very far away!"

All summer, it is the same. The ant works, and the grasshopper sings and dances. In August, the farmers cut the wheat, so the ant works faster.

Then the days get short and cold. One morning, the first snow is falling. The grasshopper is cold and very hungry, because there is no food anywhere. He walks slowly to the ant's door.

"Please, Ant," he says. "I'm so hungry. Can I have a little food?" Behind the ant, the nest is full of grain. "What were you doing all summer?" she asks.

"I was singing, of course!" says the grasshopper. The ant shakes her head. "You were singing all summer? Then you can dance all winter!"
