Sofia had loved Daniel since they were teenagers, but she never told him. They had been best friends since middle school, and she was always afraid that saying the truth out loud might ruin everything between them. Every year on his birthday, she wrote him a letter instead, and hid it in an old wooden box under her bed.
This year was different. Daniel was moving to another country next week, and Sofia knew this might be her last chance. She wrote a new letter, her hands trembling as she chose every word carefully.
When she saw him at the airport, her heart was racing. She reached into her bag for the letter, but it wasn't there. She had left it on her desk in her rush to leave. For a second, she almost turned back. Instead, she took a breath, looked into his eyes, and finally said the words out loud.
Daniel's eyes widened, and for a moment neither of them spoke. Then he smiled, the kind of smile she had imagined for years. "I felt the same way, but I was always too afraid to say it first, in case I lost you as a friend," he said quietly, taking her hand.
