Few buildings have captured the imagination of so many people as the Library of Alexandria, and few have been so thoroughly misunderstood. Popular accounts describe a single glorious institution that was consumed in one catastrophic fire, taking the whole of ancient wisdom with it. The reality, as historians now understand it, is both less dramatic and more interesting.
The library was established in the third century BCE in Alexandria, the great Egyptian port founded by Alexander the Great, under the rule of the Ptolemies. It was located in the royal quarter of the city, and it formed part of a larger institution called the Mouseion, or "Museum," a center of research where scholars were housed, fed, and paid so that they could devote themselves to study. The ambition was extraordinary: to collect, in one place, the writings of the entire known world.
Ancient sources suggest that the Ptolemies went to great lengths to build the collection, and that copying and acquiring scrolls was a serious business of state. Nobody knows exactly how many scrolls the library held at its height, because the figures in ancient texts vary widely, and some of them are probably exaggerated. What is certain is that it became one of the most important centers of learning in the ancient Mediterranean.
So what happened to it? The most popular story blames Julius Caesar, whose troops set fire to ships in the harbor in 48 BCE, allowing the flames to spread to parts of the city. Other accounts name the emperor Aurelian in the third century CE, or Diocletian, or Christian mobs at the end of the fourth century, or Arab armies in the seventh. Each of these stories has been repeated many times, and each has been challenged by scholars.
The current consensus is that the decline was gradual, not sudden. The library continued to exist after Caesar, and it is mentioned in sources from later periods. A more probable explanation lies in the loss of support: after the Ptolemaic rulers expelled many foreign scholars in 145 BCE, and as later regimes funded the institution unevenly, its activity slowly weakened. Libraries, after all, do not survive on scrolls alone. They need money, protection, and people who care.
There is a lesson in this less spectacular version. The great loss of ancient knowledge may not have been caused by a single act of violence, but by centuries of neglect. The story of a burning library is a powerful image. The story of a library that was slowly allowed to fade is more uncomfortable, because it is a story that can happen again.
