A country mouse lived in a quiet field. His house was a hole under an old tree. His food was simple: beans, seeds, and sometimes a piece of hard cheese. One summer, his cousin from the city came to visit. The town mouse looked at the beans and made a face. "How can you live like this?" he said. "Come to the city with me. You will eat like a king."
The country mouse agreed. They walked all night, and in the morning they arrived at a big house. In the dining room, there was a table with cakes, fruit, and sweet jam. The country mouse had never seen so much food in his life. "This is wonderful!" he said, and he took a bite of cake.
Suddenly, the door opened with a bang. A huge cat ran into the room, and the mice ran to a small hole in the wall. They waited, quiet as stones. When the cat left, they came out again and started to eat. But then a dog began to bark, and they hid again.
This happened three times before lunch. The country mouse was tired, and his little heart was beating very fast. "This city is more exciting than my field," he said, "but it is much more dangerous." He picked up his bag. "Goodbye, cousin. I prefer my beans in peace to cake in fear."
