Every day at 12:15, the bell rings for break. My friends Maya and Jonah and I eat lunch on the steps outside the gym. At that time, the gym is empty.
But on Monday, we hear a voice. Someone is singing in the gym! It's a deep, loud voice. "Who is that?" Maya asks. I open the door a little. The gym is dark. We see nobody, and the singing stops.
On Tuesday, the voice sings a love song. "He's good," Jonah says. "Or is it a woman?" Maya smells the air under the door. "Coffee," she says. "Students don't drink coffee at school."
On Wednesday, we have a plan. Maya waits at the front door, and Jonah waits at the back door. I stand next to the light switch. At 12:15, the song begins. They open the doors, and I turn on the lights.
In the gym, there is a tall man with a coffee cup and a microphone. It's Mr. Pemberton, our principal! His face is very red. "Please don't tell anyone," he says. "The teachers' concert is on Friday, and I'm the singer."
On Friday, Mr. Pemberton sings his love song for the whole school. The three of us sing too, from the front row. We know all the words. We learned them on the steps.
