Why it trips people up
Good is an adjective, well is an adverb, and fine means acceptable. They get mixed up because I am fine, I am well, and I am good can all answer "How are you?", and because informal speech uses good for well.

Common mistakes
Wrong: He did good on the test.
Right: He did well on the test.
After did, the word describes the action, so it is the adverb well. Cambridge Grammar marks I speak German good as incorrect for the same reason.
Wrong: The soup tastes well.
Right: The soup tastes good.
After linking verbs like taste, smell, and sound, English uses an adjective, so good. Using well is an overcorrection.
Memory trick
If it describes a noun, use good. If it goes with a verb, use well. If it means "all right, no problem", use fine. After look, sound, and taste, English uses good: sounds good, looks good, tastes good.
It depends
- Fine and well for health
- Oxford lists fine and well as "in good health", and neither goes before a noun: I was feeling fine, I don't feel very well. Good is not the usual adjective for health.
- Good at and good with
- With good, skill is marked with at (good at languages) and handling people with with (good with children), according to Oxford.
