B1 vs B2 English: What Is the Real Difference?

The line between "I can get by" and "I speak fluently." Here is the real difference.

Written by Bryan López, Profesor de inglés · Updated September 2026

B1 and B2 are the two levels people mix up the most: both mean you "already speak English," but there's a real gap in fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. At B1 you get by in everyday conversations with some effort; at B2 you discuss complex ideas with natural fluency. The most accurate way to know which one is yours is a test that measures several skills at once.

B1 and B2, side by side

SituationB1 (Intermediate)B2 (Upper Intermediate)
Everyday conversationYou get by, though it takes some effortNatural fluency, almost effortless
Complex textsYou get the general ideaYou catch details and nuance
Giving your opinionSimple opinions, frequent mistakesArgue with precision, few mistakes
Work or schoolBasic tasks, simple instructionsYou take part in meetings and debates
Talking with native speakersYou need them to slow downYou keep up with normal conversation pace

Signs you're at B1

You can hold a conversation about familiar topics (travel, work, family), but you struggle to keep up when someone talks fast or uses idioms. You get the general point of an article or video, even if details slip past you. You make grammar mistakes regularly, but you get your point across.

Signs you're at B2

You can discuss abstract or technical topics without preparing beforehand. You understand movies and podcasts without subtitles most of the time. You write emails or reports with clear structure. You still make mistakes, but they no longer get in the way of communication.

Why is it so easy to mix them up?

Most people rate their own level based on how comfortable they feel speaking, not on what they can actually do with the language. Someone who's spent years "getting by" at B1 might feel confident, but that's not the same as having B2-level vocabulary and grammar. That's why self-assessment is rarely accurate: you need to measure grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening comprehension together, not just how confident you feel.

The most accurate way to find out

A test that combines all four skills (grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening) gives a far more reliable result than a self-assessment. SpeakUP Academy's free level test does exactly that and gives you your exact CEFR result (A1 to C1) in under 25 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my English level is B1 or B2?

The only reliable way is a test that measures several skills at once (grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening), not just how comfortable you feel speaking. SpeakUP Academy's free level test gives you an exact CEFR result in minutes.

What levels are B1 and B2 in English?

Both belong to the CEFR's "independent user" band. B1 (intermediate) means you get by in everyday situations with some effort; B2 (upper intermediate) means you communicate fluently and spontaneously, with little effort.

What English level counts as B2?

B2 is "upper intermediate": you can understand the main ideas of complex texts, communicate fluently with native speakers, and take part in technical or abstract conversations without preparing beforehand.

How do I know if my English is B2?

If you understand movies and podcasts without subtitles most of the time, can discuss abstract topics without preparing, and your mistakes no longer get in the way of communication, that's a good sign of B2. To confirm it precisely, a level test is the most objective way.

Which is better, B2 or C1?

Neither is "better", they're different stages: B2 is functional fluency (you communicate well in most contexts), while C1 is advanced mastery (you use the language with near-native flexibility, even in demanding academic or professional settings).

What is my real English level?

Your real level is what you can demonstrate on a test that evaluates grammar, vocabulary, reading, and listening comprehension, not what you think you know. You can find out for free with SpeakUP Academy's level test.
