Earth, land, ground
Terra- comes from Latin "terra" (earth, soil, land) and appears in everyday and scientific vocabulary. Territory = an area of land under control; terrain = the type of land surface; terrestrial = living or existing on land (opposite of aquatic or aerial); terraform = to transform a planet for human habitation; terracotta = fired clay (terra = earth + cotta = cooked). Spanish cognates: territorio, terreno, terrestre. The root "terra" equals the Spanish word "tierra".
