Earth, land, ground

Terra- comes from Latin "terra" (earth, soil, land) and appears in everyday and scientific vocabulary. Territory = an area of land under control; terrain = the type of land surface; terrestrial = living or existing on land (opposite of aquatic or aerial); terraform = to transform a planet for human habitation; terracotta = fired clay (terra = earth + cotta = cooked). Spanish cognates: territorio, terreno, terrestre. The root "terra" equals the Spanish word "tierra".

From geography to science fiction

Terra- spans from geography to modern science: territory and terrain are fundamental geographical terms; terrestrial describes organisms that live on land rather than in water or air; and terraforming is the hypothetical process of transforming a planet like Mars into a habitable world. The same Latin root is found directly in Spanish: tierra (earth), terreno (terrain), territorio, terrestre.

Common mistakes

confusing "terrestrial" with "extraterrestrial"
"terrestrial" = relating to Earth or living on land; "extraterrestrial" = existing outside Earth (extra- + terrestrial)

"Terrestrial" (terra- = earth): of the Earth, or living on land rather than in water or air. "Extraterrestrial" (extra- = outside + terrestrial): coming from or existing outside the Earth. The same terra- root appears in both — ET is the most famous "extra+terrestrial" in cinema.

A trick to remember it

Terra- = earth, land. The root equals the Spanish word "tierra". Direct cognates: territorio (territory), terreno (terrain), terrestre (terrestrial), terraza (terrace), terrario (terrarium), terracota (terracotta).
