Prepositions of Time en inglés: at, on, in para hablar del tiempo

At para horas exactas, on para días y fechas, in para periodos más largos como meses y años.

Escrito por Bryan López, Profesor de inglés · Actualizado

At, on e in también se usan para hablar de tiempo, no solo de lugar. At es para horas exactas (at 3:00), on es para días y fechas (on Monday), e in es para periodos más largos como meses, años y estaciones (in July, in 2024).

At, on, in para el tiempo

ondías y fechason Monday, on June 5th, on my birthday
inmeses, años, estaciones, partes del díain July, in 2024, in winter, in the morning

La excepción de 'at night'

Se dice "in the morning", "in the afternoon" e "in the evening", pero la noche es la excepción: se dice "at night", no "in the night".

Sin preposición antes de next, last, this, every

Nunca se usa in, on ni at antes de next, last, this o every: "next week" (no "in next week"), "last month", "this year", "every day".

Errores comunes con prepositions of time

En español, "en" cubre casi todos los usos de tiempo ("en la mañana", "en 2024"), así que es común usar "in" para todo en inglés, incluso para horas exactas o días. "In 3:00" o "in Monday" están mal, deben ser "at 3:00" y "on Monday".

During, for y since: se confunden seguido

"For" dice cuánto dura algo: "I studied for two hours." "Since" dice cuándo empezó y se usa con tiempos perfectos: "I have lived here since 2020." "During" dice cuándo pasó algo dentro de un período: "I woke up twice during the night." Una forma sencilla de recordarlo: for + duración, since + punto de inicio, during + período o evento con nombre.

By frente a until

"By" significa a más tardar en cierto momento: "Please send the report by Friday" quiere decir que el viernes es el último día para hacerlo. "Until" significa que la situación continúa hasta ese momento: "I'll be in the office until Friday" quiere decir que estás allí cada día hasta el viernes. Es fácil cambiarlas por error, pero el significado cambia: una es fecha límite y la otra es duración.
