Prepositions of Place en inglés: in, on, at y más

indentro de un espacio cerrado (ciudad, país, caja, cuarto)in the box, in London, in the kitchen
onsobre una superficieon the table, on the wall, on the street
atun punto específico o lugar de encuentroat the door, at the bus stop, at work

Otras preposiciones de lugar comunes

PreposiciónEjemplo
underThe cat is under the table.
overThe lamp is over the table.
betweenThe bank is between the pharmacy and the store.
next toShe sat next to me.
behindThe car is behind the house.
in front ofThere is a garden in front of the house.

Errores comunes con prepositions of place

Next to, between e in front of

Además de in, on y at, el inglés tiene muchas preposiciones para la posición exacta. "Next to" y "beside" significan justo al lado: "The bank is next to the pharmacy." "Between" es para dos cosas: "The cat is between the sofa and the table." "In front of" y "behind" describen delante y detrás: "The car is in front of the house." "Opposite" significa enfrente: "The school is opposite the park."

At, in y on con direcciones

Para las direcciones, el inglés usa un patrón claro: at para la dirección exacta (at 25 Main Street), on para la calle (on Main Street) e in para la ciudad o el país (in London, in Spain). La misma lógica ayuda con otros lugares: at school, at work, at home hablan de la actividad, mientras que in the school e in the office hablan de estar dentro de un edificio. Es una diferencia sutil, pero explica por qué se dice "I'm at work" y no "I'm in work".

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre in, on y at?

In se usa para espacios cerrados (in the room), on para superficies (on the table), at para puntos específicos (at the door).

¿Cuándo se usa in?

Para lugares que rodean algo por todos lados: in the box, in the city, in the car.

¿Cuándo se usa on?

Para algo que está sobre una superficie: on the table, on the wall, on the floor.

¿Cuándo se usa at?

Para un punto específico o un lugar de encuentro: at the door, at the bus stop, at the party.

¿Cuáles son ejemplos de prepositions of place?

"The keys are in the drawer." "The picture is on the wall." "She is waiting at the corner."

¿Por qué quienes hablan español confunden in y at?

Casi ninguna. Las dos significan justo al lado: "The cat is next to the window" y "beside the window" son lo mismo en el inglés de todos los días.

¿Se dice in the car o on the car?

In the car, porque estás dentro. "On the car" es encima del carro. Para buses, trenes y aviones el inglés usa on: on the bus, on the train.

Among es estar en medio de un grupo: "She was among the winners."
