Las cantidades, parte 4 de 4

Much, many, a lot of, a few y a little en inglés

Many y a few van con lo que se cuenta; much y a little, con lo que no; a lot of va con los dos: a lot of friends, a lot of time.

Mucho: a lot of, casi siempre

Si hablas español: mucho no siempre es much

En español mucho sirve para todo. En inglés, en una afirmativa lo normal es a lot of; much y many van sobre todo en negativas y preguntas.

Afirmativa

Tengo mucho trabajo.

I have a lot of work.

Negativa

No tengo mucho trabajo.

I don't have much work.

En una afirmativa, a lot of casi siempre es lo natural.

Si hablas español

Los errores que más se cometen

I have much friends.

I have a lot of friends.

Para decir mucho en una afirmativa: a lot of.

She has a few money.

She has a little money.

Money no se cuenta: a little.

I don't have many time.

I don't have much time.

Time no se cuenta: much.

No lo confundas con How much...?

How many books do you have?

Pregunta: cuántos

A lot. / Not many.

Respuesta: muchos, no muchos

How much y how many preguntan cuánto; much, many y a lot of contestan.

How much y how many

En la vida real

Si dudas en una afirmativa, usa a lot of: sirve con todo y suena natural. Much y many en afirmativa suenan formales, salvo con very, too o so: too much, so many.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Por qué no se dice I have much money?

Se entiende, pero suena raro: en afirmativa se dice a lot of money. Much va sobre todo en negativas y preguntas: I don't have much money.

¿Few y a few son lo mismo?

No: a few es unos pocos, algo positivo (I have a few friends). Few, sin a, es casi ninguno (Few people came). Lo mismo con little y a little.

¿Lots of es lo mismo que a lot of?

Sí, lots of es igual y un poco más informal: lots of time, lots of friends.

En resumen

  • Se cuenta: many, a few. No se cuenta: much, a little.
  • A lot of va con todo: a lot of ideas, a lot of time.
  • Much y many, sobre todo en negativas: not much.
  • A few es unos pocos; a little, un poco.
