In 1992, a K'iche' Maya woman from a small village in Guatemala was awarded one of the most important prizes in the world. Her name was Rigoberta Menchú, and her story began far from any stage.
She was born in 1959 in Chimel, a village in the highlands of Quiché. Her parents were Maya farmers, and the family was poor. The land in the mountains did not produce enough food, so in most years they left their community to work on coffee and cotton plantations. Work was hard, and the pay was low.
During Guatemala's civil war, her family defended the land rights of Indigenous communities, and they paid a terrible price. In 1980, her father died in a fire at the Spanish embassy in Guatemala City. He and other protesters had gone there to draw attention to the situation of the Maya people. In those years, she also lost her mother and a brother.
Menchú decided to speak for those who could not. In 1983, her book I, Rigoberta Menchú was published. It was based on interviews with the anthropologist Elizabeth Burgos. It told the story of her childhood, her family, and the struggles of the Maya. The book is in Spanish, and it was later translated into many languages.
In 1992, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote peace and to defend the rights of Indigenous peoples. She used the prize money to start a foundation that carries her name and that continues to work for the same causes.
Her story shows that a voice from a small village can be heard across the world, if someone decides to speak and if others decide to listen.
