Qué hace este sufijo

El sufijo -meter viene del griego "metron" (medida) y nombra instrumentos o unidades de medición. De "thermo-" (calor) sale "thermometer" (termómetro = mide temperatura); de "baro-" (presión atmosférica) sale "barometer" (barómetro = mide presión). En español el equivalente es -metro o -ímetro: thermometer → termómetro, barometer → barómetro, speedometer → velocímetro. La forma española a veces añade una vocal de enlace que el inglés no tiene.

No confundir: "meter" como unidad y como instrumento

En inglés americano se escribe "meter" para ambos; en inglés británico se escribe "metre" para la unidad de longitud y "meter" para el instrumento. En textos científicos internacionales: "metre" para la unidad. En español nunca hay confusión: "metro" (unidad) y "termómetro" (instrumento).
