"Think" expresses an opinion or assumption; "believe" expresses conviction or faith.

To be convinced something is true, or to have faith in someone or something.

Common mistake
- •"I think it will rain" = my impression or opinion (50-70% certain).
- •"I believe it will rain" = I am convinced (70-90% certain, stronger tone).
- •Using "I believe" for mundane opinions can sound dramatic or overstated.
Trick to remember it
Conviction scale: think (50-70% certain) < believe (70-90% certain) < know (100%). "I think she is right" = it seems so. "I believe she is right" = fairly convinced. "I know she is right" = absolute certainty. Use "think" for everyday opinions; reserve "believe" for deeper convictions.

Did you know?
"I cannot believe it" and "I cannot think of it" are near-opposites in practical use. "I cannot believe it" = I am stunned this is real (surprise, disbelief at something that has happened). "I cannot think of it" = I cannot recall it or it is not coming to mind (inability to retrieve a memory or idea). Same negation, different verbs, completely different meanings. And BELIEVE has a special use THINK does not have: religious or spiritual belief. "Do you believe in God?", here BELIEVE is the only possible verb; "Do you think in God?" does not exist as a question in this sense.

"Actually" corrects or contrasts an assumption; "really" intensifies or confirms.
One desires something possible, the other desires something impossible or contrary to reality.
"Say" is to produce words; "mean" is the intention or meaning behind them.
"Above" is at a higher level without contact; "over" implies covering, movement, or crossing.
