Escrito por Bryan López, Profesor de inglés · Actualizado

This, that, these y those se usan para señalar algo. This y that son singulares, these y those son plurales. This y these se usan para algo cerca de ti, that y those para algo lejos.

Los 4 según distancia y número

CercaLejos
Singularthis (This is my phone.)that (That is your car.)
Pluralthese (These are my keys.)those (Those are your shoes.)

This/these se usan para el presente o algo cercano en el tiempo: "This year has been great." That/those se usan para algo distante en el tiempo, pasado o futuro: "I remember that day." "Those were good times."

Uso especial al hablar por teléfono

En inglés, para identificarte por teléfono se usa this, no I: "This is Carlos" (no "I am Carlos" al contestar). Para preguntar quién habla del otro lado se usa that: "Is that Maria?"

Errores comunes con this, that, these, those

En singular se usa this o that, en plural these o those. Cerca usa this o these, lejos usa that o those.

This y that para ideas, no solo objetos

"This is important" introduce algo que vas a explicar. En conversación, "that" se usa normalmente para lo ya mencionado y "this" para lo que viene: "Listen to this, you'll love it." "That was really funny."

  • This is my brother, and that is his friend.
  • Can you pass me those papers, please? (¿Me pasas esos papeles, por favor?)
  • These cookies taste amazing. (Estas galletas saben increíble.)
  • I don't like that song. (No me gusta esa canción.)
  • Look at this photo, it was taken last summer.

Presentar personas

Cuando presentas a alguien que está cerca, el inglés usa this: "Mom, this is Sara." Por teléfono, la gente dice "Hi, this is Carlos" para presentarse, nunca "I am Carlos". Y cuando señalas a alguien lejano, se usa that: "Who is that man over there?"

Practica en voz alta pares como this/these y sit/seat.

Frases comunes con this y that

  • this morning, this week, this year (el período actual)
  • that day, that night, that time (un momento del pasado)
  • That's right. That's great. That's a pity. (Eso es. Qué bien. Qué pena.)
  • This is it! (el momento que esperabas)
  • What is this? What is that? (¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué es eso?)
