BY THE TIME: conjuncion temporal que introduce una clausula con sujeto + verbo. Estructura mas frecuente: BY THE TIME + simple present/past + main clause con will have / would have / had. Pasado: "By the time I realized the error, it was too late" (cuando ya me di cuenta = past simple). Futuro: "By the time you read this, I will have already left" (para cuando leas esto = present simple, resultado: future perfect). Presente: "By the time they finish, we will have been waiting for three hours."

"The project must be completed by the end of Q3" = debe completarse a mas tardar al final del tercer trimestre. BY con tiempo: "by 5 p.m." / "by tomorrow" / "by next week." Diferencia con UNTIL/TILL: "I will work until 5 p.m." = trabajare hasta las 5 (durante todo ese tiempo). "I will finish by 5 p.m." BY = plazo maximo. UNTIL = duracion hasta un punto.

Error frecuente
Los errores clasicos: (1) "By the time she will arrive" = INCORRECTO. BY THE TIME + PRESENTE (no futuro): "By the time she ARRIVES" (no "will arrive"). La misma regla que con WHEN, ONCE, AS SOON AS: conjunciones temporales + presente para referirse al futuro. (2) "By the time I arrived, the meeting started" = INCORRECTO. El evento anterior debe ir en PAST PERFECT: "By the time I arrived, the meeting HAD ALREADY STARTED" (la reunion empezo antes de que yo llegara = past perfect). (3) Confundir BY (plazo) con UNTIL (duracion): "I will wait by 5 p.m." = INCORRECTO si significa "esperare hasta las 5." Correcto: "I will wait UNTIL 5 p.m." "I will finish BY 5 p.m." = terminare antes de las 5 (limite). "I will work UNTIL 5 p.m." = trabajare hasta las 5 (duracion).

Regla rápida
By the time = conjuncion (+ clausula con sujeto+verbo): "By the time she left, it was over." By = preposicion (+ sustantivo/tiempo): "Finish by Friday." By the time + past = main clause en past perfect. By the time + present = main clause en future perfect.
By the time you read this, I will be gone."
