SINCE: indica el PUNTO DE INICIO de una situacion o accion que CONTINUA hasta el presente (o hasta el momento de referencia). "I have worked here since 2019" = empece en 2019 y todavia estoy aqui (la situacion sigue activa). "Since" va tipicamente con el PRESENT PERFECT o el PAST PERFECT: "She has been here since Monday" / "He had been waiting since noon." SINCE puede introducir una fecha ("since 2020"), un evento ("since the merger"), o una clausula ("since she arrived"). IMPORTANTE: SINCE marca un PUNTO EN EL TIEMPO, no una duracion. Para duraciones usa FOR: "I have worked here FOR five years" (duracion de 5 anos) vs "since 2019" (punto de inicio).

"I moved here three months ago" = me mude tres meses antes del momento actual. AGO siempre mira hacia el PASADO desde el presente y siempre expresa una DISTANCIA: cuanto tiempo atras. AGO va tipicamente con el SIMPLE PAST (preterito): "She called an hour ago." NUNCA con present perfect: "She has called an hour ago" = INCORRECTO. La estructura: CANTIDAD DE TIEMPO + AGO: "five minutes ago", "two weeks ago", "three years ago."

Error frecuente

Para duracion usa FOR: "I have lived here FOR three years." (2) "She called me since an hour ago" = INCORRECTO. SINCE y AGO no se combinan. "She called me AN HOUR AGO" (simple past + ago). O: "She has been calling since noon" (present perfect + since + punto). (3) "She has arrived two hours ago" = INCORRECTO. AGO va con SIMPLE PAST, nunca con present perfect: "She ARRIVED two hours ago." (4) "I know him since five years" = INCORRECTO DOBLE: neither "know" ni "five years" trabajan con since. Correcto: "I have known him FOR five years" / "since 2019."

¿Sabías que...?
La palabra "ago" es uno de los terminos mas antiguos del ingles que siguen en uso activo. Proviene del inglo-sajon "agan" que significaba "pasar" (como en el tiempo que pasa). En el ingles moderno temprano (siglo XIV-XVI), "ago" aun se usaba en expresiones como "long ago past" (hace mucho tiempo). Curiosamente, en el ingles de Shakespeare, "ago" era frecuentemente reemplazado por "since" o "past" en el mismo significado, y la distincion moderna entre las tres palabras era mucho menos sistematica. La gramaticalizacion de AGO como adverbio exclusivo de DISTANCIA AL PASADO (siempre con simple past) es una regularizacion que ocurrio gradualmente entre los siglos XVII y XIX y que hoy es una de las reglas mas uniformes del ingles moderno.
