"Must" = obligacion (tienes que hacerlo); "mustn't" = prohibicion (no debes/puedes hacerlo).
MUST: obligacion fuerte o necesidad. (1) OBLIGACION del HABLANTE (obligacion interna, regla propia): "You must submit the form by Friday" = es obligatorio. "I must remember to call her." (2) DEDUCCION LOGICA (certeza): "She must be tired after that flight" = debe de estar cansada (estoy casi seguro). "This must be the right address." Must solo existe en PRESENTE en ingles moderno — para el futuro o el pasado, usa HAVE TO: "I will have to call him." "She had to leave early."
All visitors must sign in at the reception desk and wear a visitor badge for the duration of their time in the building.
The team must complete the security certification before they are granted access to the production environment.
After that performance review, she must feel incredibly proud — the feedback from the entire leadership team was outstanding.
MUSTN'T (MUST NOT): PROHIBICION. "You mustn't smoke in this building" = esta prohibido fumar. "You mustn't tell anyone about this" = no debes/puedes decirle nada a nadie. "You mustn't go" = esta PROHIBIDO que vayas (prohibicion). "You DON'T HAVE TO go" = no es NECESARIO que vayas (ausencia de obligacion, puedes ir o no).
You mustn't share any information from this meeting with external parties — the details are strictly confidential until the official announcement.
Employees mustn't use personal devices to access company data — all work must be done through approved and encrypted company hardware.
You mustn't modify the contract template without prior approval from the legal team — any unauthorized changes could create compliance issues.
Error frecuente
EL ERROR MAS GRAVE Y MAS COMUN: confundir MUSTN'T (prohibicion) con DON'T HAVE TO (ausencia de obligacion). "You mustn't come to the party" = ESTA PROHIBIDO que vengas (no puedes venir). "You don't have to come to the party" = NO ES NECESARIO que vengas (puedes venir o no, es tu eleccion). Lo correcto: "you DON'T HAVE TO worry about that."
Truco para recordarlo
La TABLA DE LOS TRES ESTADOS para los modales de obligacion: OBLIGACION (tienes que) = MUST / HAVE TO. "You MUST go" = "You HAVE TO go." PROHIBICION (no puedes) = MUSTN'T / CANNOT. "You MUSTN'T go" = "You CANNOT go." AUSENCIA DE OBLIGACION (no es necesario) = DON'T HAVE TO / DON'T NEED TO. "You DON'T HAVE TO go" = es tu eleccion. Pregunta de decision: "no debes" -> prohibicion? = MUSTN'T. "no tienes que" -> no es necesario? = DON'T HAVE TO. Esta distincion es CRITICA: en el ingles, el negativo de "obligacion" (must) NO es "prohibicion" (mustn't) — es "ausencia de obligacion" (don't have to).
Regla rápida
Must = obligacion fuerte o deduccion logica. Mustn't = PROHIBICION (no esta permitido). Don't have to = ausencia de obligacion (no es necesario).
"Must" en positivo = obligacion. "Mustn't" = prohibicion (no ausencia de obligacion). "Don't have to" = ausencia de obligacion. Esto significa que en ingles, para negar la obligacion debes cambiar completamente el verbo modal (de MUST a HAVE TO). Este fenomeno se llama "supletivismo modal" y es comun en los modales ingleses: WILL no tiene pasado propio (usas WOULD para el condicional, WAS GOING TO para el pasado). CAN no tiene infinitivo (usas BE ABLE TO).
