Direct speechvsReported speech

"She said, 'I am tired'" = reproduccion exacta.

  • She told the team: "I need everyone to submit their updates by 5 p.m. today — no exceptions."

  • "We have finalized the partnership agreement," the CEO announced at the press conference.

  • The consultant asked, "Can you walk me through the current workflow before we identify the bottlenecks?"

(1) TIEMPO VERBAL: retrocede un paso (backshift): present simple -> past simple, present continuous -> past continuous, will -> would, can -> could, present perfect -> past perfect. (2) PRONOMBRES: se adaptan al nuevo hablante. "I" -> "he/she", "you" -> "I/he/she/they". (3) REFERENCIAS DE TIEMPO: "today" -> "that day", "tomorrow" -> "the following day", "yesterday" -> "the day before", "now" -> "then". (4) REFERENCIAS DE LUGAR: "here" -> "there", "this" -> "that".

  • She told the team that she needed everyone to submit their updates by 5 p.m. that day.

  • The CEO announced that they had finalized the partnership agreement.

  • The consultant asked if she could walk her through the current workflow before they identified the bottlenecks.

Error frecuente

Los errores mas comunes: (1) No aplicar el BACKSHIFT: "She said she is tired" = incorrecto si el "said" es pasado. La regla: si el verbo de reporte esta en PASADO, el verbo de la clausula indirecta retrocede un paso: "She said she WAS tired." (2) No cambiar los PRONOMBRES: "She said 'I am tired'" -> "She said I am tired" = INCORRECTO (la "I" no tiene referente claro). Correcto: "She said SHE was tired." (3) No cambiar las REFERENCIAS DE TIEMPO: "She said 'I will do it today'" -> "She said she would do it today" = dudoso. Si "today" ya paso, deberia ser "that day": "She said she would do it THAT DAY." (4) Usar "say" con objeto personal directo (sin "to"): "She said me" = INCORRECTO. Correcto: "She told me" o "She said to me" o "She said (that)...".

Truco para recordarlo

La ESCALERA DE RETROCESO de tiempos verbales (backshift): Present simple ("I work") -> Past simple ("she worked"). Present continuous ("I am working") -> Past continuous ("she was working"). Past simple ("I worked") -> Past perfect ("she had worked"). Present perfect ("I have worked") -> Past perfect ("she had worked"). Will ("I will go") -> Would ("she would go"). Can ("I can do it") -> Could ("she could do it"). "She said the Earth is round" = no necesita backshift porque sigue siendo verdad.

Say + that (sin objeto directo). Tell + objeto personal (she told ME).

She said: "I have already sent the files." -> In reported speech: She said that she _____ the files.

Ejercicio 2 · Elige la correcta

The manager told the team _____ the client report before leaving for the conference.

Ejercicio 3 · Forma la palabra

He said: "I will call you tomorrow." -> He said that he _____ the following day.

Pista: Backshift: WILL becomes what in reported speech? And "tomorrow" becomes what?
