Second conditional = situacion PRESENTE o FUTURA imaginaria o improbable (if + past / would). Third conditional = situacion PASADA que NO ocurrio y sus consecuencias imaginadas (if + past perfect / would have).
SECOND CONDITIONAL: IF + PASADO SIMPLE / WOULD + INFINITIVO. Expresa situaciones imaginarias, improbables, o contrarias a la realidad PRESENTE o FUTURA. "If I had more money, I would travel more" = si tuviera mas dinero (no lo tengo ahora), viajaria mas. "If she were the CEO, she would change the strategy" = si ella fuera la CEO (no lo es), cambiaria la estrategia. Nota: con "to be", se usa "WERE" para todas las personas en el ingles formal: "If I were you...", "If he were taller..." (aunque "was" es comun en el ingles informal).
If I were in charge of the project, I would restructure the timeline to give the testing phase more time.
Si yo estuviera a cargo del proyecto, reestructuraria el cronograma para dar mas tiempo a la fase de pruebas.

THIRD CONDITIONAL: IF + PLUSCUAMPERFECTO / WOULD HAVE + PARTICIPIO PASADO. Expresa una situacion PASADA que NO OCURRIO y sus consecuencias imaginadas. Es la condicional del arrepentimiento y la especulacion retrospectiva. "If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam" = no estudie suficiente (pasado, ya no puede cambiarse) y no pase el examen — estas son las consecuencias imaginadas si la situacion hubiera sido diferente. "If she had taken that job offer, she would have moved to New York."
If the team had flagged the issue earlier, the engineers would have had time to fix it before the product launch.
Si el equipo hubiera identificado el problema antes, los ingenieros habrian tenido tiempo de solucionarlo antes del lanzamiento del producto.
She would have been promoted last year if she had stayed at the company instead of taking the freelance opportunity.

Error frecuente
Los errores mas comunes: (1) "If I would have more money" = INCORRECTO. La clausula IF del second conditional usa PASADO SIMPLE, no would: "If I HAD more money." (2) "If I had studied, I would pass" = MIX INCORRECTO (mezcla third condicional en la if-clause con segunda en la principal). La tercera condicional debe ser consistente: "If I HAD studied, I WOULD HAVE passed." (3) "If he was taller" (informal/americano) vs "If he WERE taller" (formal) — ambas son aceptadas, pero el ingles formal prefiere WERE. (4) "Would have" en la clausula IF: "If I would have known" = MUY COMUN como error. Correcto: "If I HAD known."

La condicional mixta (mixed conditional) combina partes de la segunda y tercera: se usa cuando la condicion pertenece al PASADO pero la consecuencia se refiere al PRESENTE. "If she had taken that job (third — pasado), she would be in New York now (second — presente)." Esta estructura es una de las mas avanzadas del ingles y raramente se ensena explicitamente en niveles intermedios, pero es muy comun en el habla nativa. Los examenes de Cambridge Advanced (C1) y Proficiency (C2) la incluyen regularmente como punto de evaluacion.
